What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health
Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy management consulting business that serves acute care hospitals, hospital-based retail/outpatient customers, ambulatory care settings, Community Health Centers, Specialty Pharmacies and alternate care facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.
Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers; may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes. Ensures the correct and safe dispensing of prescription medications to the general public, in accordance with legal, ethical and professional guidelines; may also consult with and advise patients and physicians regarding prescribed and over-the-counter medications.
Job Summary
The Pharmacy Manager directs, manages, facilitates, and coordinates the execution of all administrative and clinical activities within the department. Through the optimization of procedures, this role ensures consistent and efficient delivery to control costs, minimize waste, optimize customer relationships and deliver positive patient outcomes while maintaining compliance with Federal and State regulatory agencies. This role is responsible for workflow inclusive of monitoring staffing activities, performance and achievement of individual and departmental goals.
Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates all clinical activities, including supervision of refilling machines, medical prescriptions database entries and distribution of medicines.
Plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates all administrative activities, including scheduling of pharmacy workflow tasks, monitoring process compliance and monthly reporting.
Implements policies and procedures to comply with regulations for medication handling including receipt and storage of medicines, inventory and expenses controls.
Manages day-to-day activities of the pharmacy staff and monitors their performance to meet departmental goals.
In the absence of medications, communicates with nursing, doctors and administrative areas to provide alternatives and makes and/or supervises preparation of such medications.
Maintains staff certifications and maintenance of database privileges and access controls to medical records.
Provides pharmaceutical care to patients as a staff pharmacist as needed.
Assesses and maintains pharmacy inventory and executes necessary orders, including reviews, to maintain optimal supply and ongoing availability of medications, identifying and procuring alternative medications to mitigate risks, when necessary.
Leads processes for hiring of pharmacy staff, onboarding, and performance management, including leadership of competency evaluations process and documentation.
Manages internal workflows of pharmacy, including optimization of staffing and scheduling to maintain best-in-class and streamlined pharmacy operations.
Participates in and leads meetings and provides insights to committees to ensure coordination among cross-functional groups.
Assists in execution of plans for lowering costs, increasing efficiency and driving profitable growth to support strategic business objectives within the pharmacy.
Assumes responsibility for quality assurance monitoring and completing End of the Month processes.
Qualifications
PharmD or RPh with valid pharmacist licensure in the State of employment
4-8 years of experience, preferred
