The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Residency at Henry Ford Hospital is designed to develop an advanced practitioner with specialized expertise in emergency medicine. The program prepares residents to deliver high-quality, exidenced-based pharmaceutical care to diverse patient populations and become a board-certified emergency medicine pharmacist upon completion of the program. Graduates of the program are qualified for clinical pharmacy specialist positions in emergency medicine.
Henry Ford Hospital is an 877-bed, tertiary care, Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and academic teaching hospital that provides 24/7 emergency department pharmacy coverage. The pharmacists in the emergency department participate in medical and trauma resuscitations, procedural sedation, and rapid sequence intubations. They are responsible for answering drug information questions, medication preparation, and medication administration.
The emergency medicine resident will train alongside eleven PGY1 pharmacy practice residents and residents in the following PGY2 specialties: infectious diseases, critical care, pharmacotherapy, oncology, ambulatory care, thrombosis & hemostasis, and transplant medicine. The resident will also have opportunities to serve as a preceptor for 4th year student pharmacists from Wayne State University during emergency medicine rotations.
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Residency program is in precandidate status per the ASHP regulations.
Available rotations: Residents complete 11 four-week rotations including an orientation session in July. Eleven required rotations are completed in core areas of emergency medicine pharmacy practice:

Eight weeks are completed in elective areas. Elective options include:
Community Emergency Medicine Pediatric Emergency Medicine Neurosurgical Critical Care Neonatal Intensive Care Repeating any of the required ICU clinical rotations
Additional activities: Present an ACPE-accredited continuing education seminar to the pharmacy staff Participate in hospital pediatric and adult resuscitation coverage Participate in weekend/holiday staffing and clinical pharmacy services (240-hour total weekend coverage, one major and one minor holiday, combination of 8- and 12-hour shifts) Participate in precepting pharmacy students and PGY1 residents Participate on a multidisciplinary hospital committee Complete a medication use evaluation Evaluate and present a medication for formulary review Design and complete a residency project and participate in a structured research training program An optional teaching certificate program is available in collaboration with Wayne State University

Applicants must be a graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy, have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency, and be eligible for Michigan licensure. Academic transcripts, letter of intent/personal statement, three professional references, and curriculum vitae should be submitted to PHORCAS. The application deadline is January 2nd.
