The two-year Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency is combined with a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health. This residency consists of a PGY1 Pharmacy year followed by a PGY2 year in Pharmacy Administration. It was created by an experienced leadership team to provide opportunities for the resident to develop leadership and expert pharmacy management skills in a variety of settings. AGH is the flagship hospital within the Allegheny Health Network, an integrated delivery network consisting of ten hospitals ranging from large academic medical centers to community hospitals. Skills to be developed during clinical and administrative rotations include information technology and asset management, drug use management and medication safety, staff management, and making complex financial and organizational decisions.
Residents in this program are integrally involved in daily leadership activities, gaining hands-on experience in preparation to assume leadership roles upon graduation, either in traditional clinical or operational leadership paths or in less traditional career paths in a variety of leadership and corporate roles. The program allows for flexibility and customization to match the evolving career aspirations of the residents. Upon graduation, each resident will receive PGY1 and PY2 residency certificates as well as the MPH degree.
The PGY1 Pharmacy residency year occurs within our PGY1 Pharmacy – Acute care setting clinical residency training program. Residents will complete required rotations in cardiology acute care, surgical acute care, intensive care, infectious diseases, internal medicine, transitions of care, administration focused experiences in pharmacy operations and practice management, and longitudinal experiences in research/MUE, teaching (journal club, continuing education, student conferences, student co-precepting/mentoring), administrative on-call and inpatient pharmacy staffing.
The PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership year consists of longitudinal experiences in pharmacy operations (hospital- and network leadership, finance, advanced operations), clinical pharmacy management (formulary- and medication use management), medication-safety/regulatory and policy management, co-supervision of a pharmacy area, pharmacy management projects, and administrative on-call. Concentrated experiences in automation/informatics, GPO/central fill, retail/specialty- and ambulatory/oncology pharmacy management, human resources, safety, group-purchasing, and hospital executive leadership also occur.
Longitudinal Leadership and Professional Development sessions are coordinated through the year across the Health Network. The option to participate in a Teaching Certificate program with an affiliated University is available.
