Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job Successfully maintains competency in Technician Skill Certifications in multiple areas of the department to continually be aware of new and updated Pharmacy practices. Trains new staff/students in areas of his/her competency to promote growth and development opportunities within the Pharmacy Department. In collaboration with the Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Technician Coordinator, assists staff to ensure established workload timelines are met, identifies and solves operational problems, and completes special projects as assigned. Regularly works in multiple areas and shifts of the department to help support the staffing needs of the Pharmacy Department. Able to independently use a computer and/or automation resources in an efficient and timely manner as relevant to their practice area and ensures accurate billing. Independently maximizes inventory turnover, prevents stock-outs, and minimizes drug wastage to optimize financial performance of the Pharmacy Department. Complies with the laws governing the storage and maintenance for all drugs, including Schedules II-V to ensure the integrity of the Pharmacy Department. Complies with California Board of Pharmacy sterile compounding standards when preparing intravenous products, to establish consistent, accurate, and timely delivery. Position Summary MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center offers a PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Practice Administration residency program. The resident program is designed to provide a broad experience in pharmacy administration, with specialized emphasis in financial analysis, inventory management, human resources, project management, formulary management, and sales and contracting. In addition, the resident participates in budget preparation, staff presentations, and receives training in management concepts and principles for the inpatient pharmacy department.&#xa0; Upon completion of the resident year, a certificate is awarded. One resident position is available. Appointment will be made for July 2021. Program Purpose: Pharmacists successfully completing this PGY2 residency will be competent to work in health care management.&#xa0; An exposure to a wide variety of health care issues and professional development will provide a well-rounded experience designed to enhance success in the professional marketplace.&#xa0; Residents will demonstrate professional maturity by developing a personal philosophy of practice excellence; effective management of time, projects, and interpersonal relationships; and a commitment to professional competency. Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job: Design, implement, and manage a safe and effective medication-use system. Apply contemporary quality methodology to the management of pharmacy services. Lead and manage the health system pharmacy&#8217;s human resources. Demonstrate personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operative effectively within the health system and advance the profession and practice of pharmacy. Description of Medical Center: MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC) and Miller Children&#8217;s and Women&#39;s Hospital Long Beach (MCWHLB) have a combined 845-licensed beds and a combined average daily census of approximately 550 patients.&#xa0; Long Beach Medical Center provides patient care services to emergency, critical, acute medical, surgical, and rehabilitation patients. Specialty areas include Memorial Heart and Vascular Institute, Todd Cancer Center, Level 2 Trauma Center, Wound Care Unit, and Rehabilitation Hospital.&#xa0; MCWHLB provides specialized services to both pediatric patients and Center for Women patients.&#xa0; Specialty services include a regional, tertiary care referral center for the treatment of high-risk pregnancies and newborns and the Jonathan Jaques Cancer Center. Inpatient pharmacy services are provided by a staff of ~60 pharmacists and ~75 support staff.&#xa0; On the inpatient side, medications are provided using automated dispensing cabinets as well as a cassette system.&#xa0; Cassettes are filled utilizing a robot and state of the art packaging equipment.&#xa0; Intravenous solutions are made in a USP 797/800 certified clean room, and automated compounders are used for complex solutions.&#xa0; In addition to the central pharmacy, medications are provided from 3 inpatient satellites (2 ICU satellite pharmacies). LBMC and MCWHLB have implemented an electronic medical records and CPOE featuring the Epic System since late 2009.&#xa0; Pharmacy school teaching affiliations for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) exist with the University of Southern California, University of California, San Francisco, Western University, University of California, San Diego, and University of the Pacific.&#xa0; The pharmacy department has provided residency programs since 1972.&#xa0; In addition to having one PGY2 administrative pharmacy resident, there are 4 PGY1 pharmacy residents. The medical staff consists of approximately 1,200 physicians covering all medical specialties.&#xa0; Physician residents in training are represented in areas of critical care medicine, family practice, surgery, pediatrics, OB-GYN, and pathology.&#xa0; An affiliation exists with the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine.&#xa0;  Projects: There will be long and short-term projects that will encompass all areas of the inpatient pharmacy.&#xa0; The resident is expected to present one major project at Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows, and Preceptors. Pharmacy Administration: The residents will meet with the Executive Pharmacy Director, Pharmacy Managers and other members of the pharmacy management staff to discuss contemporary issues related to pharmacy service.&#xa0; Topics may include implementation/management of pharmacy services, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee-related information, budget preparation, drug procurement and inventory control, drug distribution systems, personnel management, and pharmacy practice issues.&#xa0; During this year, the resident will become knowledgeable in the unit dose drug distribution systems, quality improvement programs, and pharmacy involvement with other hospital departments. Stipend and Other Benefits: The resident receives a yearly stipend of $71,000.&#xa0; In addition, the resident receives 24 days of paid time off (vacation, holidays, and sick leave), and time to attend educational meetings; health insurance is provided. The Pharmacy Technician effectively communicates with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, and patients. Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job Trains new staff/students in the areas of his/her competency, to promote growth and development of Pharmacy Staff. Successfully maintains competency in multiple Technician Skill Certifications relevant to his/her practice area(s) and is continually aware of new or updated Pharmacy methods. Solely maximizes inventory turnover, prevents stock outs, and minimizes drug waste to optimize financial performance of the Pharmacy Department. Complies with California Board of Pharmacy sterile compounding standards when preparing intravenous products, to establish consistent, accurate, and timely delivery of medications. Complies with the laws governing the storage and maintenance of all drugs, including Schedules II-V, to secure the integrity of the Pharmacy Department. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the technician ensures accurate preparation, labeling, and timely delivery of medications as prescribed to ensure excellent patient care. Able to independently use computer and/or automation resources in an efficient and timely manner as relevant to their practice are and ensures accurate billing.</description>
