The Pharmacy Department consists of a central inpatient pharmacy, three satellite pharmacies, decentralized clinical services, three outpatient pharmacies, a specialty pharmacy, and population health services. The satellite pharmacies provide specialized services to the Operating Room, Pediatric ICU, and Hematology/Oncology. Pediatric clinical pharmacists round daily with specialized multi-disciplinary teams in Neonatology, Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Bone arrow Transplant, Infectious Disease, Pediatric Intensive Care, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care, Pulmonary, Complex Care, General Pediatrics, Cystic Fibrosis, Surgery and Psychiatry.

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Department has a unique relationship with six Columbus area hospitals, providing care for their Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Pharmacy will provides for these patients clinical pharmacy services, order review and verification, most medication doses, and all total parenteral nutrition.

Job Description

This 12-month ASHP-accredited PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Pediatrics provides residents with advanced clinical training in pediatric and neonatal pharmacotherapy, as well as numerous teaching and research opportunities. Pharmacists completing this residency will be competent clinical pharmacy practitioners in a variety of pediatric subspecialty populations and will possess the skills necessary for multidisciplinary team collaboration, advanced pharmacotherapeutic problem solving, and patient advocacy. Additionally, pharmacists will possess the clinical, communication, and leadership skills necessary for effective preceptorship, didactic teaching, and self-guided project management. Graduates of this residency program will be adequately prepared to enter pediatric pharmacy practice as a clinical pharmacy specialist and/or clinical academician and sit for Board Certification in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy.  Two positions are offered yearly.

Required rotations include Neonatology, Pediatric Critical Care, Pulmonology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care.  Five elective rotations allow the resident the option of focusing in a subspecialty area of the resident’s choice or exploring other clinical areas such as Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Nutrition Support, Surgery, Toxicology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Bone Marrow Transplant, General Pediatrics, or clinical administration.  Other additional resident activities include: participation in a longitudinal ambulatory care clinic, on-call service (out-of-house), inpatient staffing, teaching and precepting students, a pediatric elective course, and academic and research activities.  A teaching certificate program through The Ohio State University is also available.
