Our program is a joint collaboration between LIU Pharmacy and The Brooklyn Hospital Center. The emergency department is a level two trauma center and a designated regional stroke and STEMI center with more than 75,000 annual patient visits. The residency experience is designed to develop the resident into an independent practitioner with advanced expertise in emergency medicine by conceptualizing and integrating experience and knowledge. The resident will also receive a comprehensive experience to the three-legged stool of academia: teaching, service, and scholarship. Graduates will be prepared to assume positions in emergency medicine as highly qualified pharmacotherapy specialists by an institution or as assistant professors at a college of pharmacy, as well as be prepared to sit for the board certification exam in emergency medicine.
The program will include clinical rotations in emergency medicine, critical care, pediatric critical care/emergency medicine, and infectious diseases in addition to a toxicology rotation at the NYC Poison Control Center and an ambulance ride-along. Residents will participate in the in-house on-call program where they will play a key role in emergency response and maintenance of clinical services. This will require the resident to stay in the hospital for a 12-hour shift or overnight for a 24-hour shift participating in adult and pediatric medical emergencies and responding to antimicrobial, drug information, and pharmacokinetic consults. Residents will practice under a collaborative drug therapy management agreement in the emergency department which includes the review of positive microbiology cultures for discharged patients.
Application Requirements: PharmD degree, graduate of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program, eligibility for New York licensure, authorized to work in the United States, and a completed application through PHORCAS. Minimum GPA 3.0. Must specifically address our in-house on-call program in letter of intent. Three letters of recommendation with one required from PGY1 residency program director and one from a residency program preceptor in emergency medicine or related specialty.
