The PGY2 Critical Care Residency at Henry Ford Hospital is designed to produce a specialized practitioner in critical care who can deliver pharmaceutical care to diverse critically ill populations and become a board certified critical care pharmacist upon completion of the program.  Graduates of the program are qualified for clinical pharmacy specialist positions in critical care.

The resident will gain experience in the care of critically ill patients in a broad diversity of specialized critical care practice areas including medical, surgical-trauma, cardiac, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, and pulmonary intensive care. The resident will be an active member of our system wide critical care council committee. The program is designed to help foster the development of practice leadership skills.   

Henry Ford Hospital is an 877 bed, tertiary care, teaching hospital and is part of the Henry Ford Health.  This critical care resident will work with eleven PGY1 pharmacy practice residents and residents in the following PGY2 specialties: infectious diseases, pharmacotherapy, oncology, ambulatory care, thrombosis & hemostasis, and transplant medicine. The critical care resident will have opportunities to serve as a preceptor for 4th year student pharmacists from Wayne State University while on rotations in critical care.

The PGY2 residency program is an ASHP accredited 12-month learning experience with one position available per year.

Available rotations:
Residents complete 13 four-week rotations including an orientation session in July.  Eleven required rotations are completed in core areas of critical care pharmacy practice:

Two rotations are completed in elective areas. Elective options include:

Solid Organ Transplant
Pulmonary Hypertension
Neonatal Intensive Care
Repeating any of the required ICU clinical rotations

Additional activities:
Present an ACPE-accredited continuing education seminar to the pharmacy staff 
Present journal clubs and patient cases to students and pharmacy staff 
Participate in Code Blue coverage
Participate in staffing and clinical pharmacy services every third weekend
Participate in precepting pharmacy students
Participate on a multidisciplinary hospital committee 
Complete a medication use evaluation 
Evaluate and present a medication for formulary review 
Design and complete a residency project and participate in a structured research training program
An optional teaching certificate program is available in collaboration with Wayne State University

• Zachary Smith (PGY2 Critical Care RPD), was selected as the 2023 recipient of the Critical Care PRN Mentor of the Year award by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy
• Mary Fronrath’s (PGY2 Critical Care Resident 2021-22) PGY2 research project received the top research presentation at the Society of Critical Care Medicine Michigan Chapter's Annual Scientific Symposium
• Benjamin August (PGY2 Critical Care Resident 2020-21) was the recipient of the ACCP Critical Care PRN Resident Research Grant for 2020-2021

Applicants must be a graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy, have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency, and be eligible for Michigan licensure.
