This is a one year specialized residency training program designed to prepare the resident to become an infectious diseases clinical pharmacy specialist.

The infectious diseases pharmacy residency program at MSKCC provides the resident advanced training in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy for a variety of medical and surgical patients, both adult and pediatric, in mostly the inpatient setting with some outpatient experiences. The antimicrobial stewardship component allows opportunity to improve leadership skills and collaborate with multiple disciplines on quality improvement projects, guideline development and implementation, as well as education. Infections in immunocompromised patients is a particular strength of the training at MSKCC. Longitudinal involvement with the Antimicrobial Subcommittee of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and completion of a research project are required. The program will provide the resident with broad range of clinical and research opportunities. The program is flexible to integrate the professional goals of the resident. After completing this program, the resident will have gained the knowledge and experience to be a competent infectious diseases pharmacy practitioner.

• Orientation/Pharmacy Operations: 2 weeks
• Orientation: 2 weeks
• Microbiology Laboratory: 2 weeks
• Infection Control: 2 weeks
• ID Consult Service (Attending only): 4 weeks
• ID Consult Service (Adult and Pediatric): 8 weeks
• Transplant ID Consult Service (Adult and Pediatric): 8 weeks
• Elective (ICU, BMT, Peds BMT): 8 weeks
• Antimicrobial Stewardship (ASP): 4 weeks
• Data Collection for Research: 4 weeks
• ID Consult Service (HIV and Geriatric) at Brooklyn Hospital Center

Longitudinal Rotations

• Antimicrobial Stewardship on Call Weekend 
• Ambulatory ID Clinic (Travel/BMT/HIV): Once a week 
• Clinical coverage one weekend a month including ASP approval requests and follow ups. Weekend coverage starts in August.
• Medication Policy and Safety 

Residency Research and Publishing Requirements

The resident is expected to initiate and complete a research project in infectious diseases, present the results at a national infectious disease or pharmacy meeting. The project should be in a publishable manuscript form at the time of graduation.

The resident is required to present at Department of Pharmacy and Infectious Diseases conferences and prepare a review article for a monthly pharmacy newsletter.

Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy
