Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) is a 763-bed academic medical center affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. As an academic facility with a Level I trauma center, this tertiary care institution has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical, surgical, and psychiatry residencies and fellowships.
Carilion is experiencing growth in clinical pharmacy services and career opportunities exist in a variety of patient care settings. Clinical specialist and Clinical Staff II pharmacist positions have similar core responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients within the service line to assure safe and effective drug therapy; developing and maintaining a clinical practice by participating in clinical rounds; collaborating with service line providers to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications; serving on relevant committees; educating patients, other health care providers, and pharmacy staff; and reviewing and processing medication orders. Clinical pharmacy specialists and Clinical staff II pharmacists are directly involved in precepting pharmacy students, PGY1 pharmacy residents, and PGY2 pharmacy residents as relevant to their practice setting.
Position-specific details include:
Emergency medicine night shift: Sign-on bonus eligible. This clinical specialist position will work a 7 on/7 off night shift schedule, alternating with a clinical specialist counterpart. The clinical specialist provides care in a Level 1 trauma center and primary stroke center, responding to trauma and medical emergencies for adult and pediatric patients.
Psychiatric pharmacy: Sign-on bonus eligible. This clinical specialist position will collaborate with inpatient psychiatry teams caring for adults, children, and adolescents. The specialist assists with medication management of complex psychiatric disease states and chronic medical conditions.
Infectious diseases: Sign-on bonus eligible. This clinical specialist position will support Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) efforts throughout the Carilion Clinic health system with a focus on Carilion’s five community hospitals. The specialist provides remote prospective audit and feedback utilizing decision support software, reviews rapid diagnostic blood culture results, and assists with AMS administrative responsibilities.
Internal medicine: Sign-on bonus eligible. This clinical staff II pharmacist will be part of the medicine service line composed of an Internal Medicine clinical pharmacy specialist and other clinical staff II pharmacists in Internal and Family Medicine. Responsibilities include 4 weeks of rounding with a multidisciplinary inpatient IM team and 4 weeks of providing day/evening decentralized zone coverage in various units.
General Pediatrics/Pediatric critical care: Sign-on bonus eligible. This clinical staff II pharmacist works closely with multiple pediatric clinical pharmacists, including one other clinical staff II pediatric pharmacist. This position alternates between 4 weeks of rounding with a multidisciplinary team on the general pediatric unit and PICU and 4 weeks of day/evening decentralized work in pediatric oncology, mother/baby, and inpatient child/adult adolescent psychiatry.
Cardiology clinic: This ambulatory specialist position will support the physicians and advanced care practitioners in the Roanoke Heart Failure Clinic as a team member focusing on medication reconciliation, getting patients on guideline directed therapies at targeted doses, and reducing heart failure readmissions through transitions of care work. The specialist will support general cardiology with drug information questions and other assistance as needed.
Weekend and holiday rotation staffing commitments exist for each position, with the exception of the ambulatory specialist position at the heart failure clinic.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required. Specialized PGY2 residency training in the respective practice setting is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
