The ECU Health Medical Center PGY2 Infectious Diseases (ID) Pharmacy Residency offers rotations in a variety of settings including the adult antimicrobial stewardship program, adult ID consult rounding services, HIV/ID clinic, clinical microbiology, and the outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) program. ECU Health has a formal antimicrobial stewardship program that has been in place for over 20 years. The program serves the large academic medical center in Greenville, North Carolina as well as the community hospitals affiliated with ECU Health and located across eastern North Carolina. The PGY2 ID resident will gain experience taking care of patients in both settings. Through the antimicrobial stewardship program the resident will work collaboratively with ID trained pharmacists and providers. Routine patient care consists of prospective audit with feedback, management of antimicrobial restrictions and responding to rapid molecular blood culture results. The resident will also help manage the antimicrobial formulary, create hospital antibiograms, analyze antimicrobial use data and oversee a variety of guidelines and resources that serve the ECU Health system. The ID division affiliated with ECU Health offers the resident opportunities such as inpatient consult rounding, ambulatory clinic visits and collaboration with the ID Fellow program. A formal OPAT program also provides the resident with exposure to the transitions of care involved with complete ID management.
The PGY2 ID resident will be involved with the multi-disciplinary Antimicrobial Utilization and Stewardship Subcommittee (AUSS) of the ECU Health System P&T. They will also regularly attend ID case conference, ID journal club, Infection Control Committee meetings and other regulatory/quality committee meetings. In addition, the program offers teaching opportunities with pharmacy students from Campbell University and the University of North Carolina, infectious diseases fellows, medical/surgical residents, PGY1 pharmacy residents, nurses, and allied health professionals. Program requirements will allow the PGY2 ID resident to successfully obtain the Advanced Antimicrobial Stewardship Training Program certificate through Making a Difference in Infectious Diseases (MAD-ID).
The program follows the accreditation standards set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). It provides in-depth training on core practice concepts in ID and broad exposure to a variety of ID practice settings. The ASHP and Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP) required competency areas, goals, and objectives document also provides a list of key disease states and topics that will be covered during this ID PGY2 residency.
Applicants must be graduates of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and have successfully completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program (or one with candidate status). Applicants must also be eligible for licensure in North Carolina.
