Residents receive a comprehensive benefits package from Hackensack University Medical Center. The resident will have on-site parking, lab coat, and meal card support. Financial support is provided for residents to attend ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting and the SAEM Conference. Financial support may be provided for additional educational conferences as deemed necessary by the residency advisory committee.

PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program

Located just 8 miles west of Manhattan, Hackensack University Medical Center is a nonprofit teaching and research hospital that is the largest provider of healthcare services in the state of New Jersey with over 800 inpatient beds. It is a Level-1 Emergency trauma center that sees over 110,000 adult patients per year. An additional 40,000 patients visit the Pediatric Emergency Department annually. It is also a Comprehensive Stroke Center and a STEMI catheterization center with full cardiothoracic surgical capabilities.

The programs primary goal is to offer advanced training in Emergency Medicine pharmacy with an emphasis on the following areas:

• Assessment and evaluation of the pharmacological treatment of patients presenting to the ED
• Development and enhancement of teaching skills through didactic and experiential teaching of Doctor of Pharmacy students
• Development and enhancement of written and oral communication skills
• Development of research skills

Responsibilities

Though certain responsibilities of the resident are required, the program has the flexibility to develop activities consistent with the resident’s background and career goals.  In general, the resident’s responsibilities include:

• Attend daily patient care activities at Hackensack University Medical Center and make appropriate recommendations to interdisciplinary treatment teams
• Design, monitor, and evaluate treatment goals for Emergency Department patients that consider patient-, disease-, and drug-specific information and ethical considerations
• Present educational in-services on pharmacy topics to patients, pharmacy staff, and interdisciplinary treatment team
• Supervise pharmacy students on clerkship and/or PGY1 residents
• Complete a research project and implementation, as well as present this research at a conference

Applicant must have received their Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in New Jersey, and have successfully completed an ASHP accredited (or one in the ASHP accreditation process) PGY1 residency prior to the start of the residency program. HUMC only accepts candidates that are US citizens, green card holders or on J1 visa.

HUMC participates in the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Applicants interested in the program should submit the following materials through PhORCAS:

2. Three recommendation letters – references should complete the reference section in PhORCAS. Traditional letters of reference are not required. The clinical preceptor should be able to comment on your scope of responsibility, total patient load, level of autonomy, clinical abilities, and organizational and time management skills.
