The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Houston Methodist West Hospital offers a unique combination of individually tailored clinical experiences, drug information opportunities, and research endeavors. Residents will have the opportunity to advance the growth of the pharmacy profession, contribute to the advancement of the medical and pharmacy literature, and develop clinical, teaching, and leadership skills. As a closely integrated community hospital offering complex services, we expect to provide the residents a well-rounded experience of all clinical and operational aspects of our pharmacy department through their one-year learning journey. At the completion of the PGY1 program, the resident will be well equipped and qualified to continue in a PGY2 residency program or begin professional service in a clinical, hybrid, or operational role within a complex care health system.
The program provides core experiences in Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Management, and Transitions of care. Elective experiences in Emergency Medicine, Oncology (ambulatory care setting), 340B operations, Academia, and Cardiology are available, as well as potential off-site opportunities.
The PGY1 resident will be mentored by 9 board certified preceptors in a variety of specialized practice areas as well as work alongside more than 50 professional pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy interns. The resident will engage in patient care committees and clinical pharmacist consult services all while working with hundreds of physicians. The PGY1 resident will have ample teaching opportunities including providing instruction and mentorship to Doctor of Pharmacy Students on rotation. Additionally, the resident will conduct a continuous quality improvement project as well as a research project to be submitted for publication. The resident will also provide an ACPE-accredited CE program and may elect to participate in the teaching certificate program through the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.
