Pediatric emergency medicine pharmacists work in a hybrid role of verification, dispensing, and bedside patient care activities in the emergency department, which is designated as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Their primary responsibilities include: optimization of medication therapy, preparation and distribution of medications, management of transitions of care to inpatient floors and critical care units, providing drug information to nurses and physicians, patient education, discharge medication management, and home medication reconciliation. The ED pharmacists manage medication-related phone calls from outpatient pharmacies and families and review cultures for discharged patients under the ED culture follow-up protocol. They are responsible for responding to patient bedsides to prepare medications and make appropriate recommendations regarding medication therapy during traumas, cardiac arrests, and other medical emergencies. In addition to pharmacy residents, the ED pharmacists precept APPE pharmacy students and Applied Therapeutics small groups.
