The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Medication Safety Manager to join our team. The Medication Safety Manager will provide leadership and operational oversight for the organization’s medication safety program, collaborating with pharmacy, nursing, medical, and informatics teams to improve safety across the medication-use system. The position will lead efforts focused on medication event review, process improvement, and proactive risk reduction.
Responsibilities include: chairing and participating in key safety and quality committees, including the Medication Safety Task Force; overseeing a consistent and timely approach to medication event analysis and follow-up; evaluating the medication-use process to detect trends, identify hazards, and implement system-based improvements; developing and refining policies related to medication safety; collaboration on medication safety-related technology and automation initiatives; and supporting educational activities that enhance safe medication practices. The Medication Safety Manager will support professional development and assist with onboarding and orientation activities where applicable.
This position will collaborate with pharmacy and organizational leadership to promote safe and optimal, and cost-effective medication-use processes. This position will report to the Director of Drug Policy, Medication Safety, and Informatics and work closely with pharmacy operations, informatics, drug information, quality improvement, and clinical leadership. Success in this role requires strong communication and organizational skills, performance improvement competencies, data analysis capabilities, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively when addressing complex system opportunities. Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
Current license or eligibility to be licensed as a Pharmacist by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
Experience Requirements
Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency plus a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a complex health-system pharmacy environment, or a minimum of five (5) years of progressive professional experience in a complex health-system pharmacy environment.
Demonstrated interest and experience in medication safety, quality or performance improvement, or related operational initiatives.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Ability and willingness to act as preceptor for students and/or pharmacy residents.
Job-related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.
Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Analytical skills including ability to interpret data, recognize trends, and prioritize safety risks.
Desired Qualifications
Work-related experience in medication safety, pharmacy quality, or medication-use technology.
A Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management-related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH, or MBA is desirable.
Completion of PGY1/2 or PGY2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy
Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management, and the Epic electronic health record is highly desirable.
Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification is highly desirable.
