Medical Center is a teaching hospital where pharmacists are a vital part of the interdisciplinary team and daily patient medical rounds. Pharmacists are de-centralized and integrated completely into the following services: internal medicine, family medicine, critical care, trauma/surgery, NICU/pediatrics, transitions of care, and emergency medicine. Our pharmacists make numerous evidence-based medication recommendations which are frequently accepted. We have a robust preceptor group with extensive precepting experience. Most of our pharmacy preceptors are board certified, residency trained, or both. Medical Center Hospital is a 402 beds hospital with 37 beds in the ER, and a 40+ bed ICU/CCU.

The Critical Care Pharmacists are a visible and integrated member of the multidisciplinary team and are responsible for a variety of activities that improve the medication use process and patient safety. They contribute to the development and maintenance of an effective formulary based on safety, efficacy, cost, and work with physicians to develop/improve clinical treatment guidelines. Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

• Participating in daily multi-disciplinary rounds
• Serving as a drug information and formulary resource to patients, nurses, and physicians
• Continual assessment of the appropriateness, safety and efficacy of an individualized patient’s drug therapy
• Assist with all resuscitation efforts, advanced cardiac life support, and general management of all applicable emergent situations that occur in the intensive care unit
• Procure, prepare, and dispense medications as needed
• Create, design, and perform quality improvement initiatives
• Serve as a preceptor for on-site PGY-1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents and pharmacy students.
• Complete all pharmacy consults throughout the day (TPN, aminoglycosides, vancomycin, warfarin, etc)
• Participate in IV to PO interchanges, renal dose adjustment, and medication verification.
• Educate other healthcare providers on approved treatment guidelines and cost-effective use of medication 

Residency training (PGY1 required, PGY2 preferred), license in state of Texas, Board Certification (preferred, or to be obtained within 3 years)
